Health Careers Awareness, Exploration & Education (AEE)

The Health Careers Awareness, Exploration, and Education (AEE) model, developed by Na Lei Wili Area Health Education Center (AHEC), is a community-centered approach designed to inspire and prepare Hawaiʻi’s future healthcare workforce.

Rooted in the belief of “growing our own,” AEE provides a guided pathway for students to discover, explore, and pursue careers in healthcare, while staying connected to their communities and culture.

Awareness

Inspiring the first spark

The Awareness phase introduces students to the wide range of opportunities within healthcare. Through school visits, career presentations, and community events, participants gain early exposure to health professions and begin to see themselves in these roles.

Exploration

Turning curiosity into experience

In the Exploration phase, students engage in hands-on learning and real-world experiences. Opportunities such as workshops, site visits, and mentorship allow participants to deepen their understanding of healthcare careers and reflect on their personal interests and goals.

Education

Building skills and pathways

The Education phase prepares students for the next steps in their journey. Participants develop foundational knowledge, practical skills, and confidence through structured learning experiences, including programs like the Summer Health Academy. This phase supports students as they transition toward higher education and careers in healthcare.

What sets the AEE model apart is its strong foundation in community and culture. By integrating local values, mentorship, and culturally grounded practices, Na Lei Wili AHEC ensures that students are not only career-ready, but also connected to the communities they serve.

Through a continuous and supportive pathway, AEE empowers local students to become the next generation of healthcare professionals for Hawaiʻi.
